Gooseberry picking day.
Second year running we suffered the effects of sawfly
in the gooseberries, these little nasties just eat the leaves - all of them. They live in the ground and just pop out a couple of times a year when we are not looking and eat everything, wrecking the plant.
The only good thing is that they don't eat the berries - the bad thing is that the bushes prefer the leaves left on in order live.
Today we picked and bottled lots of gooseberies and will consider the fate of the bushes and the unwelcome lodgers. I may try to replace the bushes in another part of the garden because we so like gooseberries - it might be worth the risk.
