In the summer of 2011 I made a drawing in the National Gallery of a courtyard scene by de Hootch, shown below left with my elemental copy in the middle.

With this drawing I began to develop a little painting of my own from the rather brief note in my sketchbook (I made no further reference to the original work). I coloured and re coloured with oils the small A4 panel for some weeks until I reached the point shown on the right. Happy with this I set it aside and made a simple frame for it.

Only now do I refer back.

My interest was caught in The NG by the arrangement of the parts not by the treatment or the light values. Consequently my piece is different and the same.

I like it.
